Using a Weak Password
Avoid simple names or words you can find in a dictionary, even with numbers tacked on the end. Instead, mix upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols. A password should have at least eight characters. One good technique is to insert numbers or symbols in the middle of a word, such as this variant on the word “houses”: hO27usEs!

Leaving Your Full Birth Date in Your Profile
It’s an ideal target for identity thieves, who could use it to obtain more information about you and potentially gain access to your bank or credit card account. If you’ve already entered a birth date, go to your profile page and click on the Info tab, then on Edit Information. Under the Basic Information section, choose to show only the month and day or no birthday at all.

Overlooking Useful Privacy Controls
For almost everything in your Facebook profile, you can limit access to only your friends, friends of friends, or yourself. Restrict access to photos, birth date, religious views, and family information, among other things. You can give only certain people or groups access to items such as photos, or block particular people from seeing them. Consider leaving out contact info, such as phone number and address, since you probably don’t want anyone to have access to that information anyway.

Posting Your Child’s Name in a Caption
Don’t use a child’s name in photo tags or captions. If someone else does, delete it by clicking on Remove Tag. If your child isn’t on Facebook and someone includes his or her name in a caption, ask that person to remove the name.

Mentioning That You’ll Be Away From Home
That’s like putting a “no one’s home” sign on your door. Wait until you get home to tell everyone how awesome your vacation was and be vague about the date of any trip.

Letting Search Engines Find You
To help prevent strangers from accessing your page, go to the Search section of Facebook’s privacy controls and select Only Friends for Facebook search results. Be sure the box for public search results isn’t checked.

Permitting Youngsters to Use Facebook Unsupervised
Facebook limits its members to ages 13 and over, but children younger than that do use it. If you have a young child or teenager on Facebook, the best way to provide oversight is to become one of their online friends. Use your e-mail address as the contact for their account so that you receive their notifications and monitor their activities. “What they think is nothing can actually be pretty serious,” says Charles Pavelites, a supervisory special agent at the Internet Crime Complaint Center. For example, a child who posts the comment “Mom will be home soon, I need to do the dishes” every day at the same time is revealing too much about the parents’ regular comings and goings.

Philippine storm, Ondoy, leaves 75 dead and missing

ondoyMANILA, Philippines – Rescuers plucked bodies from muddy floodwaters and scrambled to save drenched survivors on rooftops Sunday after a tropical storm tore through the northern Philippines and left 75 people dead or missing in the region’s worst flooding in more than four decades.

The government declared a “state of calamity” in metropolitan Manila and 25 storm-hit provinces, allowing officials to utilize emergency funds for relief and rescue, Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro said. Army troops, police and civilian volunteers have rescued more than 5,100 people.

Tropical Storm Ketsana roared across the northern Philippines near Manila on Saturday, dumping more than a month’s worth of rain in just 12 hours. The resulting landslides and flooding have left at least 52 people dead and 23 others missing, Teodoro said.

Military chief Gen. Victor Ibrado, accompanied by journalists, flew over several suburban Manila towns Sunday on board air force helicopters to witness the harrowing sight of drenched survivors still marooned on top of half-submerged passenger buses and rooftops. Some dangerously clung on high-voltage power lines while others plodded through waist-high flood waters, TV footage showed.

MANILA, Philippines — A mentally ill man hacked to death his parents and cooked the severed head of his father early Tuesday in Capiz province, police said.

Village official Federico dela Vega and his wife Edita were hammered and hacked by their 25-year-old son Fernan inside their home in the village of Linampungan, Pontevedra town at around 7 a.m., a police report said.

Federico was beheaded and his severed head cooked by his mentally deranged son, police said.

He even seasoned the cut head with salt and other seasonings, police said.

Police found the body of Edita lying inside their home early morning, her head broken, while Federico’s headless body was found on the kitchen floor.

After the neighbors were alerted of the incident, they reportedly mobbed Fernan, and police had to intervene, bringing the suspect into their custody.

Recovered from the scene were a 17-inch axe, a 12-inch knife, and a 20-inch bolo.

Kayne West Apologized to Taylor SwiftNEW YORK – It looks like Kanye West has finally given a personal apology to Taylor Swift. Representatives from “The View” say West called the country sensation after her appearance on Tuesday’s show. “He has not personally reached out or anything but if he wanted to say hi (I would),” said Swift.

After Swift’s comments, West called her and the two spoke, according to a statement from “The View.”

Kanye West Ruined Taylor Swift's Moment in the MTV VMAs 2009Kayne West delivered an outburst in the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards at the expense of country and pop sweethear, Taylor Swift.

If you can recall, West flipped out after losing the VMAs, the Grammy, the American Music Awards and more from way back. This time, his complain was on Beyonce’s behalf because the wrong person had been awarded a trophy.

Beyonce was nominated for best female video for “Single Ladies” but was bested by Swift. The 19-year-old best selling artist of year outside of Michael Jackson was giddy when she won for her clip, “You Belong With Me”. She said, “I always wondered what it would be like to maybe win one of these someday, but never actually thought it would happen.”

“Taylor, I’m really happy for you, and I’m gonna let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time,” he said, as a shocked Beyonce looked on and the crowd began to boo West.

Job Hunting in Facebook

facebookHey facebookers! I’m not sure if this is also done in the Philippines, but nearly half of US employers research on-line profiles of job candidates on social networks like Facebook, MySpace or LinkedIn.

The largest US on-line job site, CareerBuilder.com,  said they use social networking sites to check and screen job candidates. CareerBuilder said, the job seekers should be mindful of the information they post online because 29% use Facebook, 26% use LinkedIn and 21% use MySpace. 11% search blogs while the remaining 7% follow candidates on Twitter.

35% of those surveyed said they have content that caused them not to hire a candidate. Content like the following:

  • Drinking
  • Using drugs
  • Inappropriate photographs or information
  • Badmouthing a previous employer, co-worker or clients
  • Poor communication skills
  • Making discriminatory comments
  • Lying about qualifications
  • Sharing confidential information from a previous employer

Some profiles provided a good feel for the candidates personality while other demonstrated solid communications skills. The vice president human resources at CareerBuilder recommended that we should clean up the digital dirt before we hunt for jobs.

The Miss Universe 2009 was held in Nassau, Bahamas, Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009.

It must be great for Venezuela to won 2 times in a row!  Stefania Fernandez, won the crown that 84 contestants wished for. I haven’t watched the whole pageant though because I needed to work. It was aired here in the Philippines, August 24, 2009, Monday at 9:30AM. Even though, I read few articles on-line which kept me informed.

As what you can see in the first image, Dayana Mendoza, Miss Universe 2008 places the sash for Miss Universe 2009, Stefania Fernandez. The crown briefly fell to the floor as it was passed on. See image in this page: Crown fell from her head. You can also see few photos from the pageant in that page. You’ll  get to see how excited and grateful she was.

“I feel we have reached the level that men are at,” Stafania Fernandez said during a question-and-answer segment. She believed women have overcome obstacles such as hitting the glass ceiling.

She was also asked later on how she thought beauty contests promoted equality between men and women. Fernandez said, this provided exposure and are models to follow.

The televised event, Miss Universe, included musical performances by Flo Rida, Heidi Montag; where she sang “Body Language”, from her debut album, David Guetta and Kelly Rowland. The blond star of MTV’s “The Hills” was also there to perform.

Billy Bush and Claudi Jordan of “Access Hollywood” and a former Miss Rhode Island USA were the on-stage hosts. Dean Cain and supermodel Valeria Mazza were one of the Judges.
